No Shower Required

This might sound a bit backwards but I feel like I have gotten lazier since having kids. It’s kind of weird to say that because I probably do more in any given week than I did during an entire semester at college, but when I have a free moment now I just want to do nothing. Like literally, nothing. The problem is there are always a MILLION things that need to be done, which is totally overwhelming so lately I’m just like “fo’get about it” and I do nothing instead. It’s like if a master procrastinator and a poor time manager had a baby and named her Amy. Hi, I’m Amy.

No one else in my family is lazy so I can’t even really blame it on genetics. If my mom has a spare moment in her day she starts going door to door to see who else needs help. My dad is en route to work before I even wake up for the day and then heads straight to the gym or for a bike ride after a 45 minute commute home. And then there’s my brother and his overly active family who are all about the weekend excursions. I don’t know what my problem is or why I didn’t get an ounce of my mom’s energy. She’s 60 and spent all day at my house doing yard work when there was a heat advisory. I attempted to run errands with Carter and gave up after one stop when I was sweating so bad just from getting him out of the car and carrying him into the store. I kept calling her to make sure she wasn’t having a heat stroke, because the weeds aren’t going to pull themselves and I don’t offer workman’s comp. No but for real, I don’t think I could function in a world without her. She has more ambition and talent than I ever will. Happy Birthday, Mom! Love you. Kiss. Kiss.

I’ve also come to the realization that I  hate showering because it requires too much energy. I have thick unruly hair so drying and styling it is a 45 minute process. At least. I don’t even like it on day one of washing it anyway. It’s frizzy and poufy because I give up on round brushing it about half way through. I mean, who really looks at the back anyway, right? Plus now that I have kids I have to get them ready, too (God, they are so needy) which usually leaves about 10-20 minutes for myself before I’m running down the stairs screaming at everyone because we really needed to leave 5 minutes ago and why can’t we EVER BE ON TIME FOR ANYTHING!

If there’s one positive outcome from becoming increasingly lazier over the years, it’s that I’ve gotten pretty good at pulling myself together in 15 minutes or less. I would like to assume I’m not the only one who struggles with time management and personal hygiene so here are a few outfit inspirations to get you out the door quickly with no shower required. The 3 keys here are hats, head scarves, and top knots.

Panama Hat: Forever 21 (sold out. similar here or with a wider brim here )

White Tee: Forever 21 (sold out. This knotted tee is a similar length or this tunic tee)

Jeans: Paige Verdugo Skinny (non-distressed version here – bonus on sale for under $150!)

Gingham Slingbacks: Franco Sarto (sold out. Also like these floral slingbacks  from DSW or these mule slides from JCrew Factory)

Bandana: Nordstrom (Not online. Amazon has them here though. My favorite way to add a pop of color to a casual outfit is by tying a bandana or silk scarf around my wrist like a bracelet. And no, I’m not part of a gang so save your bad dad jokes.)

Jumpsuit: Evereve (old, similar here and here or in chambray here )

Sandals: Target (old, similar here)

IMG_3157Kimono: Love Stitch (these are everywhere right now and a super simple way to spruce up your basic tee’s)

Mom Life Tank: Evereve (on sale for $25.49)

Bralette: Evereve (you’ll need one of these under the tank. I wore it over my bra so I still have the support but the straps are covered)

Jeans: Saks Off 5th (they always have great deals on designer jeans. These are currently under $100!) 7 For All Mankind Ankle Skinny

Sandals: Dolce Vita (old, similar here and here)

Top Knot: The trick to a good top knot is to put your hair all up in a pony first and then split the pony into 2 parts. Take one part and wrap it around the base and secure with a bobby pin. Then take the other part and wrap it over the top of what you just did and secure with another bobby pin. I’ve also braided the two halves before wrapping them when I was feeling real fancy.  I would attempt a half-assed YouTube tutorial for you but I just got myself a short new mom do, so my poor description will have to be your guide.

IMG_3156Trucker Hat: Target (old, similar here and here)

Chambray Shirt: Nordstrom Rack (similar here. If you haven’t noticed yet you will now, but I do the half tuck for just about everything. It seriously can make or break a look.)

Running Shorts: Gap (I’m all about the athleisure trend! I recently bought new workout clothes thinking it would motivate me to work out. Ehh. I’ve been wearing them a lot though ;)).

Sneakers: Adidas Stan Smiths (these are the new converses. Dress ’em up, or dress ’em down!)

IMG_3154Silk Headscarf: Vintage from Tradesy (also like this one and this one. The key is to go with a multi colored one that you can wear with a lot of different pieces)

Gingham Pullover: JCrew (color sold out but similar style here)

Shorts: Express (old, similar here from JCrew on sale for $32 and available in a lot of fun colors!)

Sunnies: Ray-Ban Folding WayFarers (big fan of the foldables for small purses. Also, a good pair of sunnies are the perfect disguise for when you don’t have time to put on makeup. Summa, summa, summa time!)

I live in a suburban area where going to the grocery store bra-less under your high school boyfriend’s football sweatshirt will suddenly make you realize you aren’t 16 and an A cup anymore. Time to act like an adult, Amy.
